Get Messy 26 practice pages + November Prompt

Romans scriptI went for a little less traditional type of sharing today. I’ve been practicing scripting recently (as it is my greatest creative struggle) and I used a verse that was really speaking to me lately. So I thought I would share how I use my art journal not just to create things to share but as a place of practicing (there are tons of pages of letters over and over and over again. Mostly S’s, those are so hard!) and collecting ideas, etc. Scripted scripture art journal by Lauren Likes

I’m taking the Studio Calico class with Ashley Goldberg Paint, Plan, Play and one of her suggestions was to create a washi tape reference page and I would like to say she is a genius! Why havent I thought of this before?! Now I can quickly have an idea of what colors I have and need, which ones stick better than others, what their textures are (how I love the fabric washi!) and can reference them for future projects. I left a little bit of room at the bottom to add additional tapes (I get a new tape each month in my studio calico kits and I tend to buy them like a crazy lady). Oh and this makes for an adorable 2 page spread….Washi tape art journal by Lauren Likes washi 2  Washi

How the prompts work: The 6 main hosts of Get Messy will rotate creating prompts each month. On the first Thursday of the month, the new prompt will be announced (always on my blog) for you to participate too! You have about a month to complete your page(s) inspired by this prompt. Then we want you to return here (again, always on my blog) on the last Thursday of the month to participate in a fun link up so we can all admire your creation! Ok? OK! This week’s prompt comes from the queen of productivity Andrea!

Journaling challenge: Pick one word that describes you right now. Just one word.

Art challenge: Play with the word you picked. Use letter stickers, cut out your word from magazines and create a collage, write your word a hundred times on a piece of paper and use it as a background, use paint to write your word, … The main focus should be on your word.

Get Messy 17 + September prompt

Elephant art journal by Lauren Likes

I got my mojo back. I found some National Geographic magazines at a thrift store here and I have officially decided that travel magazines are my number 1 art journaling tool. To make the background for this page I watercolored a dot stamp and just stamped over and over. Even though it covers the page and makes a great background, it didn’t warp the paper at all because the amount of water + paint is so thin. The gold doily is from an old Studio Calico kit and the translucent phrase in the corner is from the new Sandlot kit. This page is especially special as we just booked our tickets to Thailand for Christmas and one of my #1 dreams in life is to meet an elephant in person and now I will! EEEKKK!! (Ps I dont know what this says about me, but most things on my bucket list involve exotic animals….)Elephant gold art journal by Lauren Likes

This page. Those watercolors. I made this page and knew I couldn’t cover an inch of it. So stamping a quote was the perfect solution! At the urging of Caylee, I started carrying an idea notebook with me everywhere and I have a page for quotes I randomly find and this was one of them. I love it so! So, now I’m telling YOU to carry an idea book with you where ever you go! So many of my best ideas happen random places and in busy times, so I write them down and can refer back when I have time to sit down and make and (always) have no ideas!  Water color sunburst art journal by Lauren Likes

This weeks prompt comes from the lovely Sabine. If you haven’t checked out her blog, you are really missing out. Her archives are like a gold mine!

Journaling Challenge: Live your adventurous dreams on paper. What would you love to do, or at least try, if you had the courage to live more adventurously? I would, for example, like to live on a houseboat or a train wagon.

Art Challenge: Try a method or material you’ve never worked with before. Be adventurous!

Get Messy 13 + August prompt

Hey Hey Get Messy! We were just so blown away last week at all of your amazing parties! They all looked so fun! Can I come?! But seriously? Thank you so much for participating! We love this little community centered around art journaling.

I have officially realised I have 2 distinct styles. One is illustrated via the top page. Magazine pages + words. The second is the second page which has a very scrapbooky feel but more sharing something pretty that wouldn’t really fit into a ‘themed’ scrapbook. And you know what? I like them both. I don’t have to choose. I am claiming it. I have 2 styles. And I like it.
